“U.S. Communications and Entertainment” Report by Centris Research Shows Major Growth in Consumer Use of Home Gaming, Blu-ray, and HDTV

Centris Research's quarterly research report update for the first quarter of 2009 shows a 55% increase in households with gaming units since the first quarter of 2008, led by an 85% growth in households with the Nintendo Wii.  The Sony Playstation 3 and XBox 360 also showed strong growth.   In addition Blu-ray penetration was up 71% year over year and there was a 33 percent growth in the number of households with HDTV's in that time.

Of equal importance is the fact that satellite and cable TV both seem to be maturing, with growth rates of 3 and 2 percent respectively.

Consumers are still buying movie on discs; downloads not yet popular

70% of consumer's home video entertainment dollars go toward DVD and Blu-ray disc purchases.

As recently reported in Home Media Magazine, the NPD Group's most recent update to their "Entertainment Trends in America" consumer tracking study, based on responses from over 11,000 U.S. consumers, found that the average American consumer spends $25 per month on home video entertainment.  Of that amount:

  •  63% is spent on DVD purchases; and
  •    7% is spent on Blu-ray disc purchases
Another 18% is spent on disc rentals from sources such as Netflix.
Just 9% was spent on video on-demand (VOD) and 3% was spent on digital downloads and online streaming.

"Staycation" Mentality Will Drive Home Entertainment Sales Despite Downturn

Rather than going on vacation or dining out by candlelight, consumers see the purchase of hot new ‘must have’ electronics items like Blu-ray® players, flat panel TVs or smart phones as a far better value-for-money option. The tangible benefits of these products can be enjoyed for a long time to come and are seen by many as essential items once consumers begin the retreat into their living rooms.” (2008 Futuresource)

Disc Collections Will Continue to Grow
Consumer disc collections have grown to represent a lifetime of entertainment…as personal and memory-rich as photo albums. So even though MP3 players have changed the way many consumers buy music, consumers of all ages are continuing to add all manner of discs to their collections.

A few interesting facts about disc sales:
